A structured lesson workspace with readable content, hands-on examples, and a clean path to completion.
Experienced engineers type about a third as much as beginners. Not because they know fewer commands, but because they use history, completion, and editing shortcuts that beginners haven't learned. This lesson is a small investment that pays off on every session.
The `show history` default is 10 commands. Bump it with `terminal history size 100` for the current session, or configure it in line config for permanence. Searching history with Ctrl+R is dramatically faster than scrolling up 50 lines.
Three ways to use `?`:
Try `sh?` with no space — it lists commands beginning with 'sh'. Then `show ?` with a space — it lists commands that follow 'show'. The space matters. No space filters the current token; with space, it shows the next token's options.
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+A | Move cursor to start of line |
| Ctrl+E | Move cursor to end of line |
| Ctrl+B / Left arrow | Move cursor back one character |
| Ctrl+F / Right arrow | Move cursor forward one character |
| Ctrl+P / Up arrow | Previous command in history |
| Ctrl+N / Down arrow | Next command in history |
| Ctrl+D | Delete character at cursor |
| Ctrl+K | Delete from cursor to end of line |
| Ctrl+U | Delete entire line |
| Ctrl+W | Delete word before cursor |
| Ctrl+L | Clear screen |
| Ctrl+Z | Exit to privileged EXEC |
| Tab | Complete current token |
| Esc+B / Esc+F | Move cursor back/forward one word |
The ones that save the most time in practice: Tab completion, Ctrl+A/Ctrl+E for line navigation, and Ctrl+R for history search. Everything else is situational.
Type `sh ip int gi0/0` and hit Tab — IOS expands each abbreviated token to its full form. The `% Ambiguous command` error appears when a partial matches multiple commands; add a character or two and Tab again.

`include` (grep), `exclude` (inverse grep), `begin` (start from match), and `section` (show whole config sections matching a pattern) are essential for large configs. On a 3,000-line config, these four filters turn minutes of scrolling into seconds.
Practice the filters on any lab device. `show run | include interface` gives you every interface config line — a quick way to inventory what's configured without scrolling.
