Arguments are the interface between a script and its caller. `$1`, `$2`, and friends are positional values; `$#` counts them; `"$@"` expands them as separate arguments. Security tooling becomes much easier to compose when its argument contract is explicit instead of relying on a caller to “know how it works.”
For anything beyond a tiny script, parse options with `getopts` or a similarly deliberate strategy. Validate values after parsing. A target argument might need to be an IP, hostname, path, or filename; each has different acceptance rules. Do not use one catch-all “safe string” test for every type.
Shows the count of positional arguments without exposing their content. The useful habit here is to treat the command output as evidence about one system fact, not as a magical diagnosis.
Error handling is part of input handling. Exit non-zero when the caller supplied an invalid target, path, or mode. A monitoring pipeline can then distinguish “no findings” from “the script never ran its checks.” That distinction matters when one stage feeds another.
Iterates over each original argument as a separate word. Read the result in context: the same command can be correct yet insufficient if a permission boundary, alternate configuration, or different backend changes what it reports.
Uses a simple case statement for a small option surface. In a production workflow, save the raw result when the observation contributes to a finding. That keeps later analysis honest and makes troubleshooting reproducible.
A practitioner’s checkpoint: compare the observed behavior with the assumption your script is about to make. If the assumption is broader than the evidence, narrow the rule. If the evidence is incomplete, report the uncertainty instead of converting it into a confident finding.
Lab discipline: stay inside the declared course environment, prefer read-only checks for learning exercises, and preserve the original output of security tools before transforming it.
