Error handling in Bash is a combination of exit status, traps, logging, and good diagnostics. A trap can capture cleanup events or report the line that failed. Logging should answer what ran, when it ran, and what failed without dumping secrets or huge command strings.
Use `set -x` sparingly. It is excellent for a lab debugging session but dangerous around credentials because expanded values may appear in the trace. A better default is targeted `printf` diagnostics with levels and timestamps. When debugging a function, log inputs selectively and sanitize anything that could be sensitive.
Registers an error trap that captures the exit status and source line at failure time. The useful habit here is to treat the command output as evidence about one system fact, not as a magical diagnosis.
The command output shown here is a training fixture description. On a live system, verify the actual output rather than assuming it matches the example.
Traps execute in the shell context, which means cleanup code has its own quoting and error-handling needs. Keep trap handlers small. For multi-stage workflows, fail at the stage boundary, record a stage-specific status, and let the top-level driver decide whether to stop or continue.
Enables Bash tracing temporarily for a controlled debugging session; never leave it around secret handling. Read the result in context: the same command can be correct yet insufficient if a permission boundary, alternate configuration, or different backend changes what it reports.
A practitioner’s checkpoint: compare the observed behavior with the assumption your script is about to make. If the assumption is broader than the evidence, narrow the rule. If the evidence is incomplete, report the uncertainty instead of converting it into a confident finding.
Lab discipline: stay inside the declared course environment, prefer read-only checks for learning exercises, and preserve the original output of security tools before transforming it.
